You should actually be investing in sports shoes that are designed for the particular sporting activity you are involved in.   For example if you are doing a lot of running then shoes which are specifically designed for running in should be worn as they offer a lot more support not only to your feet and ankles, but also your legs.   Whereas if you are doing a lot of fitness bootcamp workouts you may find a pair of cross trainers much more suitable.   Not only do they offer a lot of support to your feet and legs but will help you to remain more stable when performing certain exercises.
